The summer air hung heavy with the scent of saltwater and fading sunscreen as Clara stood before the old beach house. She'd spent her entire childhood here, playing hide-and-seek with Leo. Her stomach clenched as she watched him, his back to her, laughing with a group of friends. He was effortlessly handsome, his tan skin a stark contrast to the faded blue of his worn t-shirt.

She approached him slowly, each step a monumental effort. Her palms were slick with sweat, and her mouth felt dry.

"Leo?" she asked, her voice a small whisper that was almost lost to the crashing waves. He turned, his eyes scanning her face with polite disinterest. "Do you… do you remember me?" she added, the question a plea. He shook his head, a polite smile on his face. She felt like she'd been physically punched in the gut.
