The flickering fluorescent lights of the office seemed to pulse in time with Amelia's racing heart. She clutched the crumpled email in her hand, the words – “Acquisition Pending” – blurring slightly through the tears pricking her eyes. Her fingers trembled as she reached for her lukewarm coffee, the ceramic mug suddenly feeling heavy and precarious. She'd poured her life into this company.

The news had hit her like a physical blow. A knot tightened in her stomach, making it hard to breathe. All her carefully laid plans, the promotions she'd dreamed of, the stability she'd counted on – they suddenly felt as fragile as glass. She looked around at the familiar faces, all seemingly oblivious to the seismic shift that had just occurred.

She needed to get out, to breathe. Amelia quietly excused herself, her voice barely a whisper, and fled to the fire escape, leaning her forehead against the cool metal of the railing, trying to steady herself. The city noise rose up and surrounded her, but it did nothing to soothe the fear that threatened to overwhelm her.
