A chill snaked its way down David’s spine as he overheard the hushed conversation in the break room. "Company's going to be sold," a voice hissed. His hand, as he reached for a sugar packet, felt clumsy and awkward. He hadn't been here long, but he had worked incredibly hard to establish himself.

He retreated to his cubicle, suddenly feeling exposed. The familiar beige walls, the photos of his family on his desk, seemed to shrink, closing in on him. He felt as though he was sitting at the edge of a great abyss. He pulled up the company intranet on his computer, searching for an official announcement, his mouse hand sweating slightly.

He imagined the worst-case scenarios playing out in his head: layoffs, relocations, uncertainty. Every click of the mouse seemed to echo in the sudden quiet of the office. He glanced around at his colleagues, the usual chatter a little subdued, a nervous energy bubbling beneath the surface. He felt so small in this vast sea of possibilities.
