Her hands were clammy, the eviction notice felt slick in her grasp. She paced the small room, the wood floor creaking under her hurried steps. Her thoughts raced, a jumbled mess of panic and disbelief. Her breaths came in short, shallow gasps.

The landlord’s words, the legal jargon, felt like a personal affront. She’d always paid her rent on time. This felt unfair, unjust. She wanted to scream, to rail against the injustice of it all.

She collapsed onto the bed, burying her face in the pillow. The scent of lavender, usually a comfort, now felt cloying, suffocating. The thought of facing the world, of explaining her situation, made her want to disappear.
