He held the eviction notice at arm's length, as if it were contaminated. His face was pale, his lips thin and pressed together. He carefully folded the paper and tucked it into his pocket, his movements slow and deliberate, as if trying to buy time.

He felt the weight of his belongings in the small flat. Each item, a reminder of the life he had built, of the dreams he held. He had nowhere to go, no support system to lean on. The knowledge was a lead weight in his stomach.

He went to the window and looked out at the street. The faces of the people passing by were unfamiliar, uncaring. He felt utterly alone, an island cast adrift in a vast and indifferent sea. He felt like he was starting all over again.
