The bright sunlight streamed through the window, highlighting dust motes dancing in the air. John avoided looking at the package as he sipped his coffee. It sat on the kitchen table, a square presence that seemed to amplify the silence in the room. He rubbed his temples, a dull ache throbbing behind his eyes.

He didn't want to deal with it. Didn't want to think about it. He closed his eyes, took a deep breath, and opened them again. He slowly got up, the simple act feeling like an act of defiance. He walked over to the table and picked up the package. He dropped it in the trash without looking at it.
