The aroma of burnt sugar hung heavy in the kitchen, a familiar scent now tainted with a certain… heaviness. Eleanor leaned against the counter, the cool tile offering little comfort to the throbbing ache in her lower back. For years, she'd poured her heart into cake decorating, crafting elaborate confections that were works of art. Each layer, each delicate sugar flower, a testament to her creativity. Her daughter, Maya, loved it.

Maya, nearly a teenager, whirled in, a whirlwind of energy. “Mom, I saw a tutorial on buttercream roses! Can we make a whole cake covered in them? Like, a *massive* one?”

Eleanor watched her daughter’s face light up, the same joy she herself had felt in the early days. Now, the prospect of mixing another batch of buttercream, of standing for hours piping tiny petals… felt daunting. "Maybe tomorrow, sweetie. I'm… not feeling up to it tonight."

Maya's brow furrowed. "But the school bake sale is this weekend! And you always make the best cakes!" Eleanor forced a smile. "We'll see. We'll definitely see." She knew she would give in. Always did.
