The scent of old paper and ink clung to David's hands, a perfume of sorts he used to find comforting. He ran a hand through his hair, noticing the silver strands that weren't there a few years ago. He stared at the vast collection of first editions and rare manuscripts. His lifelong passion. He used to find solace in the quiet of his study, the rustle of pages a balm to his soul. Lately, it had become a burden.

His son, Leo, a college student, strode into the room, his eyes scanning the shelves with an intensity that matched David’s own, years ago. "Dad, I found a first edition of *The Raven* at that auction. The binding is perfect!"

David nodded slowly. “That's… wonderful.” He felt a hollow ache. It had been years since he'd had the excitement of finding a rare gem. The pursuit felt like a marathon he was no longer able to complete.

Leo grinned, already reaching for a volume. “Think you could give me a hand cataloging it? I want to get it graded before the semester starts.” David stifled a groan, and gestured towards a stool. "Sure. Let's do it."
