The sterile white walls of the hospital waiting room seemed to close in on Iris. Beside her, her brother, Noah, was fiddling with a pen, clicking it open and shut, click, click, click. The sound grated on Iris’s nerves. It was the only sound she could hear.

The solicitor adjusted his glasses. "The will, as you know, was… specific. Noah, you are the recipient of the family’s health clinic. Iris, a library of medical journals and a research facility.”

Iris felt a chill run through her. The weight of responsibility, the expectations, the endless hours of study – it was a prospect that left her cold and immobile.
