Rain lashed against the windows of the manor house, mirroring the turmoil in Sarah's heart. She sat at the long dining table, staring at the untouched silver cutlery. Across from her, Ben, her brother, paced the room, his agitation palpable.

“Your grandmother made two wishes, and both have been granted,” the solicitor said. “Ben, to you, the business empire. Sarah, a collection of books.”

A collection of books. The knowledge of her grandmother's choices made Sarah feel a sense of loss and of suffocation. She didn't even read anymore. The vastness of the empire felt like a chasm that separated her from her brother, and from herself.
