The clatter of the teacups seemed deafening in the suddenly quiet kitchen. Grandma Elara’s announcement hung in the air, thick and suffocating like the summer humidity. Her daughter, Sarah, sat bolt upright, hands clasped so tightly her knuckles shone white. A tremor ran through Sarah’s fingers, making her teacup rattle against the saucer. She focused on the delicate floral pattern as if it held the key to understanding, the key to unraveling the knot tightening in her chest.

Sarah’s breath hitched in her throat. She glanced at her husband, David, his face a mask of polite surprise. She knew what he was thinking; she knew all their shared memories, Sunday dinners, and Christmas carols, would they still happen the same? She needed to escape the suffocating silence, but her feet felt rooted to the floor.

“But…the church bazaar? The choir?” The words tumbled out, her voice a strained whisper. Sarah couldn't fathom a future that didn’t include these things, the bedrock of their family life.
