“Honey, are you feeling well?” The question from her mother made Amelia jump. She had been staring blankly at the wall, lost in a spiral of uncertainty. She offered a strained smile, trying to appear unaffected. She didn’t want to burden them.

She busied herself with clearing the dinner table, her movements jerky and uncoordinated. She knocked over a glass, the shards of glass scattering across the floor. She knelt to pick them up, her hands trembling. She felt a sharp pang of pain in her chest, a sudden, suffocating feeling.
