The drive home felt interminable. David gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles were white. He glanced at the scholarship rejection email on his phone. It was still there, a constant reminder. The familiar route, usually a source of comfort, now felt like a path to despair.

He cranked up the radio, but the music failed to penetrate the fog that had descended over his mind. He was overwhelmed by the financial implications. He considered the long hours he’d have to work, the sacrifices he’d have to make. He wanted to scream.
