"Okay, so here's how you handle the inventory reports," Emily said, forcing a bright tone. Her knuckles were white as she gripped the mouse. The screen blurred a little as she typed. It wasn't the task itself, but the context that made her stomach churn.

The young man across from her, seemingly unfazed, nodded along, making notes in a neat little pad. Emily felt a rising tension, a pressure building in her chest. She had always enjoyed this part of her job, the detailed organization, the careful tracking, but now it felt like a chore.

She glanced out the window, at the sunshine that filled the sky, and thought of all the things she still wanted to do, things she now wouldn’t get to do.
