The phone felt heavy in Maya's hand. Any minute now, she thought. Any minute, the call. Across the diner table, Chloe was laughing at something, her usual infectious energy radiating outwards. Maya found it hard to concentrate on the conversation. Every time the door opened, her pulse quickened.

She’d polished her resume, crafted her cover letter, and practiced all the interview questions. Now, she just had to wait. The waitress refilled their coffees, and Maya noticed her hands were trembling. She spilled a little coffee in the saucer.

Chloe noticed her unease. "You okay?" she asked, her brow furrowed with concern. "Yeah," Maya mumbled, forcing a smile. “Just tired.” She felt as though the air had become thick and heavy, and her breath was shallow.
