The email notification popped up on Lena’s phone, and her breath hitched. Her palms began to sweat. Across the room, her roommate, Chloe, was sketching in her notebook, humming softly. The thought of Chloe getting the job instead of her sent a jolt of anxiety through her.

She picked up her phone and stared at the screen, but didn't open the email. The little icon seemed to pulse with an almost menacing light.

She ran a hand through her hair, a gesture she realized she'd been doing repeatedly throughout the day. She finally clicked the email.
