He checked the time, again. He needed to be at the airport in under two hours. The absence of his SUV was a gaping hole in his plans. His breath quickened, a desperate effort to grasp the fleeting moments before his departure.

He ran back inside, his movements jerky, frantic. The phone was the enemy, yet also the only friend. Each ring echoed through the silent house, amplifying his apprehension.

He could feel the sweat beading on his upper lip. The image of the flight slipping away consumed his thoughts, his mind battling the growing awareness of the unexpected complication. Each tick of the clock was an attack, taking chunks of his time.
