“Another promotion!” Mark’s colleagues cheered when he was told of his transfer, as he was moved to the Sales team. He plastered on a smile, but inside, a different story unfolded. His hands were clammy. He’d always preferred the quiet rhythm of the research lab.

He had never sold anything in his life. The thought of cold-calling, of presenting, of any interpersonal activity left a sour taste in his mouth. He looked at his reflection in the water cooler and looked pale. His future suddenly looked uncertain.

He’d spent the rest of the day meticulously cleaning his desk, the familiar routine a futile attempt to regain some control. He tried to focus on each task, but his mind kept drifting back to the upcoming training.
