I shifted uncomfortably in the plush armchair, trying to appear nonchalant. But my gaze kept drifting towards the bookshelf. Every book there was in German, a language I’d never learned. My partner, Oliver, had been spending a lot of time in his study lately. His door was always closed.

A knot tightened in my stomach. The silence of the house felt oppressive. My fingers fidgeted, picking at the worn fabric of the armchair. The scent of Oliver's cologne, usually so comforting, now seemed to prickle my senses. I had a terrible feeling.
