The melodic cadence of Japanese filled the air, a stark contrast to the familiar English of their shared home. Emily stood frozen in the doorway of her partner's home office. He was on a video call, and the words, flowing so effortlessly from his lips, were completely foreign to her.

She swallowed hard, her throat suddenly parched. Her pulse quickened. A wave of heat flushed her cheeks. She instinctively reached out and gripped the doorframe, seeking support. The cheerful tones on the screen became a piercing noise. She didn't know what to do.
