The card was a plain, cream-colored rectangle, tucked amongst the bills and junk mail. Sarah snatched it up, fingers brushing against the rough paper. A knot tightened in her stomach. Why would someone send her a card without signing it?

She retreated inside, the chill of the morning air clinging to her. Her breath hitched as she closed the door, the click echoing in the sudden silence. Leaning against it, she examined the envelope. No return address. Just her name, neatly printed.

She ripped the card open, her hands trembling. A generic birthday message, the kind you’d find at any drugstore. It was the lack of a signature that set her teeth on edge. Who knew it was her birthday? Who was watching?
