He stared at the blank wall in the master bedroom, a growing tension coiling in his chest. John couldn't explain it, but ever since he walked into the house, a sense of foreboding had permeated the air. He felt a nagging sensation of being watched. He kept reaching up to touch his neck, as if the collar of his shirt were too tight.

The wall looked perfectly ordinary. He'd never noticed anything peculiar about it. It was smooth, painted a calming shade of blue. But now, he saw a slight misalignment in one of the baseboards, a fraction of an inch out of place. He knelt down, his gaze fixed on the spot.

A hidden latch. He pressed it, the wall panel groaning inwards. His skin crawled. The darkness within seemed to exhale, and a gust of icy air swept over him. His throat felt constricted, making it difficult to breathe. He wanted to run.
