He stared at the envelope, the thick stack of bills contained within. He’d found the wallet in the parking lot of the grocery store. It was a considerable amount, more than enough to cover his mother's medical bills.

His jaw clenched, and his hands gripped the edge of the kitchen table. The thought of his mother's suffering, of her facing another setback due to lack of funds, filled him with a potent sense of both anger and uncertainty.

The air in the kitchen felt thick and heavy. He picked at a loose thread on the tablecloth, his gaze fixed on the money. He knew what he *should* do, but a different voice, a selfish, tempting murmur, was starting to rise up within him.
