The invitation sat propped up on the fireplace mantel, a constant, unwelcome reminder. John kept stealing glances at it, the elaborate design mocking him. He’d found himself avoiding the living room altogether. He felt a persistent flutter in his stomach.

He was irritable, snapping at his kids for the smallest things. His wife, Sarah, had noticed, asking him what was wrong. He dismissed her concerns with a shrug. He couldn’t bring himself to explain the turmoil within.

He'd started smoking again. Each drag of the cigarette was a temporary escape, but the underlying tension remained, a tight coil in his gut. He was restless, unable to settle.
