The vibrant colors of the playground seemed to mock Clara. She sat on the park bench, watching the children play. She clutched the DNA results in her hand, the paper crumpled from her grip. She felt a profound sense of isolation, a disconnection from everything she had known.

She felt a hollowness in her chest, a void she couldn’t name. Her head throbbed. She found herself watching her hands, almost as though they weren’t her own. She got up, abruptly, and walked back towards her car.

The familiar world suddenly seemed foreign, the sounds of the children a distant echo. The idea of going home seemed to fill her with dread.
