The hum of the refrigerator seemed to vibrate through Leo’s teeth as he listened to Chris. Chris was talking about a snake, a beautiful, exotic snake. Leo ran his hand through his hair. He hadn’t felt this way in a long time. The thought of sharing their small space with a creature that ate live mice sent a cold sensation down his spine.

He felt a sudden ache behind his eyes. He imagined the snake escaping, slithering through the apartment, a constant source of dread. He pressed his lips together, trying to formulate a polite way to object.

"It will be fascinating," Chris said, his voice filled with delight. Leo stared at his hands, unable to meet his gaze.
