"She was a saint," Leo had always been told of his great-aunt. He thought, as he surveyed the photographs, they looked more like a devil. A young woman with a daring dress, a cigarette and a smirk. Leo had been told she was pious.

He stared at the images. He stood there, unmoving, feeling the blood drain from his face. His carefully constructed understanding of his family was coming undone. He suddenly felt a need to sit down.

He walked over to the kitchen and made himself a cup of tea. He left the photographs spread on the table. The steam rose from the cup, but it was doing nothing to calm him.
