"Never trust the things you can't see, child," the grandmother had always said. Lily now knew she was right, even though she had no idea what her grandmother was talking about at the time. The photos offered a glimpse of a different truth. Her mother had said her grandfather was a simple, quiet man. Here he was, in a fancy car, with a woman who was most definitely not her grandmother.

Lily’s hands trembled. She felt a knot tighten in her stomach. She thought about closing the album, but the compulsion to keep looking was stronger.

She sat on the floor, surrounded by the ghosts of the past. Her gaze kept going back to the photograph. Her mouth was dry, and she swallowed hard.
