"The previous occupant..." the detective had said, his voice flat and clinical. "Foul play suspected." David stared at the stain on the carpet, the one he had assumed was just old coffee. Now, it was a reminder.

He couldn't sleep. Every night, the darkness became a canvas for his imagination, replaying the grim scene in his mind. He found himself waking up with a jolt, heart hammering, convinced he heard footsteps on the stairs.

He started sleeping on the couch, leaving the bedroom door open, trying to avoid the place where the horror might have begun. He lit incense hoping to purge the bad energy, but the scent didn't mask the lingering dread.
