The letter arrived in the mail, crisp and official, detailing the tragic events that had taken place. Maria felt her face flush, heat spreading from her chest to her cheeks. She was going to be sick. The letter described the house, her house, as the site of a gruesome crime.

She became hyper-vigilant, scanning every room, checking every corner. The sunlight, once cheerful, now seemed to highlight the shadows. She felt compelled to know every detail, but at the same time, was afraid to face the truth of what had happened in her house.

She began to spend her time outside, sitting in her car, the comfort of the locked doors and the familiar engine the only thing that gave her peace.
