"Unsolved," the detective had said, the word hanging in the air. The mystery of the previous owners' demise now dominated everything in her mind. Her new home suddenly felt like a cage.

She began compulsively cleaning, scrubbing every surface, every corner. She wanted to erase, to cleanse, to make it hers again. She started listening to podcasts about true crime, a morbid fascination that both terrified and compelled her.

She would frequently check the locks, making sure that everything was secured. She felt as though she was being watched, and was deeply unsettled.
