The email sat in Amelia’s inbox, a stark white rectangle against the muted colors of the website. She hadn’t opened it. The subject line, “Regarding Your Father,” seemed to vibrate with a hidden intensity. Her stomach felt like a tightly clenched fist. She’d been staring at it for a solid hour, the cursor blinking mockingly next to the “Read” button. She finally grabbed her phone, scrolling through social media, the trivialities of everyone else’s lives a flimsy shield against the unknown.

Her fingers trembled slightly as she finally clicked. The lawyer’s words blurred together at first, a confusing jumble of names and dates. Then, the sentence materialized: “… a half-sibling, Eleanor, residing in…” Amelia felt a sudden, inexplicable heat flush up her neck. She stood abruptly, pacing her small apartment, the worn rug soft under her bare feet.

Eleanor. The name echoed in her head, a persistent, unsettling hum. She ran a hand through her hair, the strands catching on her fingers. She grabbed a glass of water, the cold glass a momentary comfort against the warmth that persisted.
