The book lay open on the kitchen counter, its spine cracked, worn. Her stomach churned. Mark’s story was supposed to be a surprise, a secret. Now, the glossy pages, chronicling their life, felt like an unwanted intrusion. A knot formed in her throat.

She reread a particularly intimate scene, a blush rising up her neck. She pushed away from the counter, the chair scraping loudly against the tile. It was all so…exposed. Every flaw laid bare, every insecurity magnified. She looked around the kitchen, as though she would find the answers scrawled on the fridge.

She needed to get out of the house.
