He was showing Clara the ropes. He'd done the job for years, and the training manual sat open on the desk. He felt a sense of the weight that he carried daily, the emotional cost of his work.

He demonstrated the basic functions, then the more complex procedures. Clara took notes, and asked questions. He answered them all, but he felt an invisible tether, slowly loosening. As she picked up the pieces of his job, he felt a strange sense of…nothing.

He found himself wandering the halls of the building after their session, watching the other employees with a strange detachment.
