The task felt like a burden. He was supposed to be showing Sophia everything. He was a master of the mundane, and the information felt like sand slipping through his fingers. He had come to identify with the slow, almost imperceptible deterioration of his surroundings.

He walked Sophia through the daily processes, and felt a strange sense of detachment. He could see how capable she was, how quickly she learned. He felt the hollowness he'd been struggling with for so long.

He sat at his desk, and felt the silence pressing in. He didn't know what to do next.
