The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. John felt it on his skin, a burning sensation he couldn’t place. He was supposed to be organizing his mother’s effects. He just wanted to crawl away.

He came across a file labeled, "John's Achievements." Inside, a collection of academic triumphs. Awards, certificates, essays. Each a sharp reminder of his current state of inertia. He had once been so motivated.

He flipped through a science fair project about renewable energy. He remembered the enthusiasm he had put into it. The passion had faded. The project now felt like a mocking ghost. He pushed the folder away, and swallowed hard.
