The elevator ride to his office felt unusually long, each floor a step further into a land of disappointment. David, a senior developer, was now being managed by a recent graduate who was making significantly more money. He adjusted his tie, the knot suddenly feeling restrictive.

He sat at his desk, staring blankly at the code on the screen. The logic, the algorithms, the intricate dance of ones and zeros that he had once found so fascinating, now seemed irrelevant. The energy had dissipated.

He ran a hand through his hair, the strands feeling thin and limp. The office felt cold, sterile. He wondered if anyone noticed his lack of enthusiasm. His skills, his knowledge, suddenly felt…diminished.
