The afternoon sun streamed through the window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. This light brought no comfort to Michael. He felt the familiar ache in his lower back as he sat at his desk. The fact that his junior assistant was making significantly more per hour settled in his stomach like a lead weight.

He'd been so sure he was on the right track, that this job was the path he wanted to be on. He’d dedicated years to mastering the company’s systems, to becoming a reliable asset. He leaned back in his chair, and the plastic groaned beneath him.

He pushed his chair back and stared at the door. He felt like it was blocked, like it was made of solid concrete.
