The bookstore was crammed with people. They all seemed to have a destination, a purpose. Liam felt like an object drifting along on the tides. He pulled a volume off the shelf and found a letter inside.

The letter was from an artist to her muse. It spoke of the power of art, of creating something beautiful from nothing. Liam closed his eyes, imagining the creative passion. He had stopped painting years ago. He was now consumed by the tasks that he knew how to do.

He put the book back on the shelf, his hand brushing against the worn cover. He felt a phantom pain in his fingers, a reminder of the brush he no longer held. He walked toward the door, feeling the emptiness inside him grow.
