The fluorescent lights of the laundromat hummed, a monotonous soundtrack to Maya's spiraling thoughts. Another rejected job application sat crumpled in her pocket. The lint-covered floor seemed to mirror the emptiness inside her. She knelt to fish out a dropped sock from beneath a washing machine and that's when she saw it: a sleek, expensive-looking wallet.

She picked it up, her palms slick with nervous sweat. A surge of exhilaration coursed through her, quickly replaced by a wave of something else, something deeper. She opened it and saw the crisp bills, the credit cards, the identification bearing a name, a life she didn’t have.

Her reflection in the window seemed to leer back at her, a stranger. She imagined herself spending the money, escaping the constant pressure, the feeling of being… adrift. A strange, almost detached curiosity flickered within her.

She closed the wallet, shoved it into her bag, and started the dryer. The spinning clothes seemed to mock her.
