Gemotions

The garbage truck rumbled past, its stench a familiar greeting to Daniel's morning. He rummaged through the overflowing bin behind the diner, desperately searching for discarded coffee cups to collect for recycling. His joints ached. His back throbbed. He was a ghost in the city, an unseen presence. And then he saw it. A wallet, half-buried in a discarded pizza box.

He retrieved it. It was heavy, packed. His heart hammered in his chest. Inside, more money than he’d ever dreamed of. He stood there, frozen, the smell of rotting food filling his nostrils, the bustling city life oblivious to him.

He pictured his small, cramped apartment, the leaky roof, the never-ending cycle of bills and debt. He thought of his elderly neighbor, Mrs. Gable, who could barely afford groceries. The money could fix so much, alleviate so much suffering.

He felt a pull in his gut, a twisting knot that made him feel heavy. He stared at the wallet, clutching it so tight his knuckles were white.
