She stood in front of her childhood home, the same beige stucco, the same manicured lawn. The test results in her hand confirmed it. She was looking at a place that was never truly hers. The feelings she had always felt, the disconnections, finally were explained.

She rang the doorbell, but no one answered. She stood there, feeling the wind cut through her clothes, feeling the chill seep into her bones. She had no place to go. She turned and walked away. The house, the street, the world itself felt empty. She had no real roots anywhere.
