“It’s time,” her father said, his voice unusually gentle. His hand hovered over the antique writing desk, crafted by their ancestor. Clara, whose hands were covered in ink and the residue of broken dreams, felt her throat tighten.

She had spent countless hours at that desk, pouring over books, scribbling in journals, and dreaming of a life that eluded her. She was a failure.
