Gemotions

The old quilts, sewn by generations of women in her family, were spread across the bed. Each patch told a story, each stitch a testament to love and perseverance. Emily felt neither.

Her brother, Ben, paced the room, his face etched with worry. “We’re so close to losing the house, Em,” he said. The house, her refuge, her only true sense of belonging. The quilts were the only things of value they had left.

The weight in her chest intensified. She felt useless, a burden. She watched her brother, his shoulders slumped as he contemplated the sale.

“I’ll call the auctioneer,” he finally said.

She stared at the quilts, the vibrant colors now dulled, and felt the tears sting her eyes.
