The aroma of freshly baked cake wafted through the kitchen, a stark contrast to the hollow ache in Evelyn's chest. Today was both her birthday and the day of Sarah's spa day. She had planned a quiet afternoon with her family, but the enthusiasm was gone.

She stared at the cake, meticulously frosted and decorated. She’d spent hours baking it, but now it just seemed like a chore. The icing seemed to taunt her, a reminder of all the effort she felt unable to give.
