He had the flyer clutched in his sweaty palm. “Lost Dog: Buddy. Answers to his name.” He'd plastered them all over the neighborhood. He knew he'd gone overboard, but he couldn't stop. He'd poured all his energy into searching, a desperate act to quiet the hollowness echoing inside. Today, he’d spotted Sarah. Sarah, who he’d shared every scraped knee and whispered secret with as a child. He tried to approach her. “Hey, Sarah, it’s… Jake?” Her brow furrowed. She didn't have the foggiest. When he explained, she tilted her head and offered an apologetic smile. She didn’t look the least bit upset that she had no memory of the hours they spent playing pirates and superheroes. He turned, the flyer flapping uselessly in the wind, a symbol of all he'd lost. He suddenly felt the need to hide.
