The plate of food sat untouched. Sarah picked at a loose thread on her jeans. The restaurant was buzzing, filled with the cheerful chatter of happy couples. Across from her, Daniel, her childhood confidant, was laughing at something the waiter had said. He had looked at her with a fleeting hint of confusion when she'd introduced herself. His face had registered the same polite indifference she was used to. It was a new world for him. His eyes skidded past hers. The waiter returned and asked if they were ready to order. She just shook her head. The meal grew cold. The air in the room became thick and heavy. She hadn't been able to eat anything.
