The sunlight sliced through the dusty windows of the storage unit, illuminating the chaos. Sarah sifted through the boxes, a chore she’d inherited, along with a deep sense of inadequacy. Her mother, the paragon of strength, had been a whirlwind of energy, always doing, always achieving. Sarah, by contrast, felt like a shadow, drifting through life.

In a worn shoebox, she discovered a stack of photographs. Her mother, not climbing mountains or chairing committees, was at a carnival, face smeared with cotton candy, laughing with a man who was clearly not her father. The joy in her mother’s eyes was a revelation, alien and unreachable to Sarah.

She sank onto a nearby crate, the weight of the past crushing her. She was a disappointment, always falling short. The air in the unit became heavy, difficult to breathe.
