The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the lab, but for him, the world was dimming. He sat at his computer, staring at the unfinished code, his fingers hovering over the keyboard. Dr. Ito, the man who’d seen potential in him when no one else had, was moving on.

His head pounded, and a strange pressure built behind his eyes. He thought of all the failed experiments, the late nights, the times he'd felt like giving up. Now, it all seemed for naught. He felt like a cast-off, a discarded piece.

He pushed away from his desk and walked out of the lab without a word. The sounds of research faded behind him, replaced by the deafening silence of his own thoughts. He walked the streets aimlessly, not noticing the world around him.
