The words blurred before his eyes. Daniel reread the notice, the black ink swimming on the page. His head throbbed. He’d known this was coming, of course. He’d just hoped he could outrun it.

He slumped into the threadbare armchair, the springs protesting his weight. A wave of nausea rolled over him. He felt disconnected, as if observing his own life from a great distance. He felt a deep desire to be swallowed into the floor.

He stared at his hands, the skin dry and cracked. The world was closing in. He felt an overwhelming urge to just stop, to cease.
